The Baldwin-Whitehall School District has joined a statewide public outreach campaign designed
to promote the accomplishments, accountability and value of Pennsylvania's public schools.
Honors Orchestra

The area’s First Annual Elementary Honors Orchestra Festival was held at Paynter Elementary in the Baldwin-Whitehall School District on April 18, 2008. The festival gave students a unique opportunity to showcase their talent and meet others from neighboring school districts. Participating districts included Baldwin-Whitehall, Mt. Lebanon, and Quaker Valley. The fifty-six participating students were nominated by their respective orchestra instructors after completing a number of auditions.

Students enjoyed an entire day of activities including a provided lunch, a catered banquet dinner and a performance by a Duquesne University String Quartet. The day ended in the auditorium with an outstanding concert performance by participating students. The young musicians performed challenging selections with enthusiasm and vigor. The concert was captured on a CD recording arranged by festival organizer, Alan Booth.

Before the final festival performance, several parents of participants were heard commenting on what an excellent opportunity this was for their children. Baldwin-Whitehall is pleased with the success of the festival and plans to host it again in April 2009. Significant growth of the event is anticipated in the years to come.

Chamber Music

Paynter enjoyed an assembly courtesy of the PTA. Students were able to hear violins, a cello and a viola being played by professional musicians as part of the visit by Chamber Music, www.chambermusicians.com. Grades K through 5 were exposed to compositions from different music periods such as baroque and classical. Some of the music was familiar to the children, like Tchiakovsky’s The Nutcracker. Thank you to the four talented ladies for coming to our school!

Power Points

Students in third grade at Paynter were able to review their Geometry terms for the PSSA with PowerPoint.  As the first of two PowerPoint projects they will create this year in Computer class, the students reviewed skills learned in second grade; in addition to learning how to draw with and format AutoShapes.  The classes have also just begun a virtual field trip around the city of Pittsburgh; to correlate with one of their social studies themes.  Each student will investigate a random Pittsburgh topic on the internet, create a PowerPoint, and use their oral communication skills by presenting their PowerPoint to the class.  The students enjoy working independently on the Pittsburgh project because they get to express their creativity and demonstrate their computer skills!

Caring Place

Paynter Elementary held a special school-wide assembly to present a $6300 check to The Caring Place. WTAE Newscaster Sally Wiggin and Mr. Fasy Greevy, Caring Place manager and child grief specialist gratefully accepted the donation. Many thanks were given to the staff, students and community for their generosity in fundraising events such as the Penny Drive and the Staff vs. 5th Grade basketball game. Dr. Korchnak, our new district Superintendent, was there to recognize this wonderful achievement. Paynter Elementary ranks 13th out of 200 schools in fundraising totals. Great job Paynter!

Science Fair

The annual Science Fair was held on Friday, April 11th. Students displayed many interesting experiments and exhibits. Some topics included seeds, tadpoles, volcanoes, trees, crystals, and electricity. Each grade level teacher and students showcased units from the ASSET science program.  The ASSET units represented were Fabrics, Electric Circuits, Inquiry and Design, Soils, Butterflies, Sinking and Floating, Airplane Lab, and hands on activities from South Taylor Environmental Park. Gift baskets were raffled, baked goods were sold and as in years past, the Shop n Save SEED (Student’s Extra Educational Development) program from the Carnegie Science Center entitled Wild Weather Adventure was a wonderful part of the evening.

Owl Pellets

After studying the skeletal system as part of the ASSET science unit on the Human Body, Mrs. Jeffers’ 4th grade examined owl pellets for undigested bones of the owl’s prey. Students attempted to discover what animal bones they had found. Next, they were able to compare and contrast the animal bones to human bones.

Bagpipes

Mr. Huffman, father of Paynter 5th grader Samantha, visited Ms. Driscoll’s Music class to show the students an uncommon musical instrument – the bagpipes. Mr. Huffman plays the bagpipes in a Shriners band. He came wearing his kilt, talked to the students a bit about Scottish history, how the pipes are played and reminded them that the Baldwin-Whitehall School District’s mascot is a Highlander. The class enjoyed asking him questions and listening to the songs he performed.
