| Rocks and Minerals |
On Wednesday, February 20th the third graders at Paynter Elementary enjoyed a wonderful presentation by Donna Gumbel, an employee of Joy Mining Company. The students were able to explore hands-on how minerals are in so many of the things we use every day. Did you know that Gypsum is in the filling of Twinkies? One student from each classroom also got to dress up in real miner gear from steel-toed boots to a hard hat! The presentation was a wonderful link to our Science unit on Rocks and Minerals! |

| 100th Day |
What a busy 100th day of school! There were so many activities happening! All five sections of Kindergarten met in the auditorium to create an enormous paper quilt. Special snacks were prepared with 10 items of 10 different types of snacks, necklaces and hats were made, some students drew pictures of what they thought they would look like when they were 100 years old, and the book Mrs. Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of Kindergarten, by Joseph Slate was read. Thank you to all of the students and their families who sent in the wonderfully creative 100 Day projects for display in the lobby. |

| Patriotism |
| During the month of February the Character Education theme was Patriotism. Paynter students learned about and celebrated what being an American means. There was a school-wide assembly where everyone said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless the USA, accompanied on the piano by music teacher Ms Driscoll. A few students from each grade level read reflection pieces about patriotism. Mrs. Fusco held read alouds, sharing a story with a patriotic theme. This theme reflects how Americans are compassionate and care about others. 5th grade students read short biographies of famous African Americans during AM announcements. Boy Scouts led the school in the daily Pledge of Allegiance and on Friday, February 15th the spirit day was Red, White and Blue Day, encouraging all to wear those colors. |

| Shoe Drive |
| February 11 – 22 was the first Needy Soles Shoe Drive throughout the Baldwin-Whitehall School District, sponsored by BHS Literary Guild, Students Success Center, Diversity Club, Key Club, Red Cross Club, BW PTAs, and the BW Education Association. Parents, children, and staff were asked to send new or gently used shoes to school to place in the collection box. Collected shoes will be given to refugees in need in our area. Accompanying the shoe drive was a read aloud given by vice-principal, Mrs. Fusco. Paynter students were read the book Four Feet, Two Sandals by Karen Lynn Williams and Khadra Mohammed. The story, set in a refugee camp, helped students compare and contrast living conditions and to appreciate what America has to offer. |

| Talent Show |
Got Talent? Paynter Elementary sure does! The Paynter Talent Show on Friday, February 8th was a great success! 31 student acts entertained the sold out crowd. From ballerinas to a unicyclist, the show had it all. Pianists, acrobats, magicians, singers, dancers and much more! Chairperson Jaime Huber did a fantastic job organizing the event. She couldn’t have done it, without the countless parents and teachers who helped organize, decorate, and judge the cover contest. The winners of the cover contest were Kirsten Gingell and Sean Mullaney. They were given a framed copy of their cover. All participants, stage crew, and emcees should be very proud of their efforts. |

The high energy multi-media presentation by Camfel Productions of California used real students to stress the importance self-leadership and making the right choices in life. Following the assembly, students had positive comments about what they had learned. Thanks to Baldwin-Whitehall Council of PTAs for bringing this to our school.
