The Baldwin-Whitehall School District has joined a statewide public outreach campaign designed
to promote the accomplishments, accountability and value of Pennsylvania's public schools.
Jump-a-than

Ms. Engel’s math class at Paynter Elementary School recently had a Jumpers to the Rescue event.  The goal was to raise money for two animal shelters in Pittsburgh.  Students spent an hour after school participating in jump rope activities.  Many of the participating students are animal lovers.  The students raised a total of $208.00.  The event was a success.

RIF Chain

The following classes from each grade were the winners in the RIF (Reading is Fundamental) paper chain contest. Congratulations to:  Room 153 – Mrs. McWilliams; Room 110 – Mrs. Rellick; Room 120 – Mrs. Papillon/Myers; Room 127 - Mrs. Knerr; Room 141 – Mr. Kobistek; Room 135 - Ms. Brooks.  Students were asked to think of reasons why reading is important. Each reason was written on a paper chain link. Some reasons were:  “Someday you can become an author.” “To make you happy.” “To teach you how to fix something.” Chains from the winning classes are displayed in the cafeteria.

Continents

Third grade students in Ms. DeSensi’s class have been working very hard on this special continent project. First, they were assigned a continent and each group member was responsible for researching and presenting facts about that continent. Next, the students had to create, form and paint salt dough to resemble their continent. The shape and major landforms were shown. They enjoyed the hands on and learned a lot about each of the seven continents of the world.

Birdfeeders

Mrs. Smocer’s Kindergarten enjoyed a mitten-themed day. Students matched and graphed their own mittens brought from home and created a mitten book using number words. After reading The Mitten, by Jan Brett, students made their own birdfeeder to help birds through the winter. They used a mitten-shaped cookie cutter to cut out a piece of bread. A straw was used to make a hole in the bread which a piece of yarn was strung through to hang. Peanut butter was spread on it and birdseed and nuts were sprinkled on top to make a tasty treat for our feathered friends.

Recorders!

The third grade students have just begun to learn how to play the recorder.  Throughout this unit, the students will be learning to read notes and apply this knowledge to playing songs on the recorder.  They are really excited about learning to play!

RIF!

RIF has come to Paynter! Reading Is Fundamental is the nation’s oldest and largest non-profit children’s literacy organization. Thanks to funds from the BW Council of PTA’s and Paynter PTA, each and every student at Paynter received a brand new book to keep. Volunteers, organized by chairperson   Judy Hines, were on hand to hand out bookmarks and place a bookplate in each child’s book. For more information, log on to www.rif.org.

SMART BOARD!

Paynter students are getting SMART!  Paynter Elementary school received an interactive white board, or SMART Board, and a Senteo Response System in November.  The Senteo remotes interact with the SMART Board and makes test taking fun for the students.  Currently, students in the 5th grade are using the remotes in Miss Petrilla’s Technology class to help identify the location of the keys on the keyboard.  The feedback from the students has been positive. In fact, students have requested to take their quiz using the Senteo rather than traditional paper and pencil!
