Since the spring of 1995, students at Paynter
Elementary have had the opportunity to participate
in the Accelerated Reader Program. This unique
program motivates students to read more frequently
and more challenging books from an extensive
list of over 16,000 selections covering many
topics. Using a computer, students answer a
few multiple-choice questions pertaining to
the book they read.
Available
Books
Books
on our Accelerated Reader list are available
in our school library and at the Baldwin and
Whitehall Community Libraries. Each classroom
and library also has a complete Accelerated
Reader list. All qualifying books have a sticker
on the spine identifying it as Accelerated
Reader. Please be sure to follow the list for
Paynter, as the lists at other Baldwin-Whitehall
elementary schools vary from ours. All books
at the public libraries marked as Accelerated
Reader may not be on our list. For a complete
list of titles, click on this website’s
link. For younger students, it is acceptable
for parents to read the books to the child.
The goal is for the child to comprehend the
stories. We encourage parents to include at
least fifteen minutes of reading time daily
from their children. Research indicates that
consistent reading by students increases academic
level in both reading and math.
Stickers are given to each child
that takes a test.
Weekly
For every test a student passes,
they place a ticket with their name on it in their
grade’s box. At the end of each full week
of school, three tickets are randomly drawn from
each grade level’s box. Those winners receive
a prize.
Monthly
The top point earner from each classroom
gets to choose a free book and bookmark. Also,
individual classrooms that have an 85% or higher
participation rate for that month will receive
a certificate.
End of the Year
The top 10 point earners in grades
1 through 5 (top three in Kindergarten) will receive
a t-shirt and certificate for their efforts. An
additional prize for the top three in all grade
levels will also be awarded. The highest point
earner in each grade will have his/her name engraved
on a plaque located in the school lobby.
